The 1st annual Texas Digital Humanities Conference, co-sponsored by  the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Center for Advanced Computing and Data Systems at the University of Houston, the Humanities Research Center and Fondren Library at Rice University, and the Initiative for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture at Texas A&M University, welcomes submissions for twenty-minute individual papers and poster presentations for a conference on the theme of networks in the humanities.

Keynote speakers include Erez Lieberman Aiden (of Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, and Google Labs), Geoffrey Rockwell(Alberta), Tanya Clement (University of Texas at Austin), and Elijah Meeks (Stanford).

The conference will begin with a keynote address on the evening of Thursday, April 10th, and will conclude with a hackfest on the afternoon of Saturday, April 12.

We welcome submissions on a variety of topics relevant to networks in the humanities, broadly construed.  Possible topics include:

• Social Networks
• Citation Networks
• Spatial Networks
• Semantic Networks
• Media Networks
• Networks in DH
• Literary Networks
• Network Theory & Analysis
• Network Visualization

Submissions

The twenty-minute presentations slots will include 15 minutes for presentation and five minutes for questions.  Submissions for twenty minute presentations should include a 500 word abstract.  Submission e-mails should contain a 2-3 sentence bio that specifies current position and affiliations.  Graduate students should also indicate whether they  would like to be considered for a travel bursary (see below).

We will also accept poster-only submissions, and submissions for twenty-minute presentations will automatically be considered for poster presentations.  Poster-only submissions need only include a 250 word abstract.  Posters should be ready for display by the conference, which will include a dedicated poster session in which poster presenters can interact with other participants, as well as a “minute madness” session, for which the presenter should prepare 1 slide and be prepared to explain it in sixty seconds.

Travel Bursaries and Awards

We will also be offering at least two $300 travel bursaries for graduate students who submit outstanding presentations, as well as a $100 best paper award to be awarded at the end of the conference on the basis of the presentation.  The winner of the best paper award will be featured on Digital Humanities Now and automatically considered for the Journal of Digital Humanities.
